WeightLoss

Gail Galvin’s eating habits were affecting more than just her weight, despite her having tried every diet on the market.

I had always been slim, until I had my first and only child, that is.

During my pregnancy I ate so badly that after my daughter was born, I became insulin-resistant and was on my way to becoming diabetic. I
tried every diet I could: milkshake, soup and even starvation diets. I consulted every doctor and dietician in the book. I was miserable and unhappy and had extreme cravings I couldn’t control. I was always slim, athletic and proud of my body, and now I hated what I had become.

My weight changed me and it changed my relationships with people. From being a bubbly person, I was now snappy, defensive and embarrassed. I would wake up every day and say “today I am going to start my diet”, and by 10:00 that resolution had been broken and I would go through the vicious circle of self-hate and failure.

Portion control saved my life

My unhealthy eating habits were hurting more than just my figure. The doctor had warned me that I already had extremely high cortisol
(stress hormone) levels and was a prime candidate for a heart attack and stroke. My beautiful daughter needed me, but I was unfi t, had high cholesterol and was insulin-resistant. I was having anxiety attacks, had no energy, developed thyroid problems and, to make matters worse, my hormones were completely out of balance as well. Even my skin played up. I was taking a high, daily dose of glucophage (an anti-diabetic drug) for the sugar problems, which in turn started to a ect my liver, causing me to get sick, feel weak, dizzy and nauseous. I knew I had to do something about my health, but just couldn’t.

I was a complete wreck compared to the healthy person I used to be. Nothing looked good on me and I hated myself even more. I pretended that everything was okay, but emotionally I was in a lot of pain. Then, on a trip abroad I came across The Diet Plate, a portion control plate that
shows you how to eat the right amount of food without depriving yourself. I returned to South Africa, without sharing about my discovery; I didn’t want any snide remarks about my being on another diet.

I ate normal food on The Diet Plate, sticking to the portion sizes and food groups strictly, and the weight simply fell off . I felt so much better and have even stopped taking glucophage. There is no diet or special food you have to buy, you can eat whatever you want as long as it is in the correct portion and you don’t have to prepare separate meals for your family; it is so convenient.

Today I have energy and a passion for life.

I eat the correct portion sizes, drink water, exercise and I have never felt better. I believe in eating healthier options, but with The Diet Plate you really can have a wellbalanced, all-inclusive diet.
